Band
Do we still need to participate in fund-raising if we pay our entire band fees?
A: Yes. To understand why, you need to know that here are two types of fund-raisers.
"Student Account" fund raisers are intended to allow students to build up money in their "Band Account". Money in Band Accounts can be used to offset fees, and in some cases can also be used to pay for music-related purchases or band trips. We do this to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in activities which require fees.
"General Account" fund raisers raise money which is not allocated to individual students, but instead goes to support the overall program. It is important to know that "Band Fees" do not come close to covering all of the program expenses. This is why it is important for every family to participate in "General Account" fund-raisers to the fullest extent they are able. Without "General Account" fund-raisers our fees would probably be double what they are now, or the program would have to be substantially curtailed.
When deciding whether to participate in a fund-raiser or not, students and their families need to consider not only who will directly benefit from any money raised, but also whether they are doing their "fair share" to support the other students in the program . Many activities require a significant level of volunteer involvement before they will result in any profit, and some will actually lose money if we don't have sufficient volunteer support. Some other programs in our area actually require and track volunteer hours by student and by family - typically at least 10 hours of labor per month. per family.
Band is a big commitment, and it's important that every family contribute in some way so the work and financial burden can be spread out in an equitable way. Students or families who are concerned about this should speak with Suzanne Marsh, the STMAA Treasurer, about their specific situation. We do want to make sure that every student can participate to the fullest extent, regardless of their personal situation.
Are STMAA "general meetings" for parents, students, or both?
A: STMAA General meetings are primarily for parents and guardians, although students, staff, and any other interested parties are welcome to attend.
Does the school have rental instruments?
The school has a very limited supply of instruments for check-out. We encourage families to rent instruments from Bronstein's Music or Music Village
